Waltham Forest Arts Club Pop Up Gallery

In the five weeks since announcing our successful bid for a shop/exhibition space at Wood Street Indoor Market, members of Waltham Forest Arts Club have been very busy setting up a pop up exhibition space at the indoor market, and devising TURNAROUND, a weekly series of exhibitions by members of the arts club.

There are opportunities to meet many of the exhibiting artists as they will be staffing the gallery through the weeks of their shows. There is still a chance to catch TURNAROUND 2, ”Jewels of Imagination” – featuring work by Wendy Le Ber, Ellen Jones and Sanyukta Shrestha – which concludes tomorrow (Friday 24th February)

This Saturday morning will see a new show, Turnaround 3, set up by Helen Porter and fellow artists – one based primarily on various sorts of printed work exploring ideas about knowledge and belief.

Waltham Forest Arts Club’s pop up gallery is part of a project and collective effort to revive Wood St Indoor Market and so contribute to the ongoing regeneration of Wood Street. The revival has seen a great variety of new shops open up in the market about which more information can be found at:

Waltham Forest Arts Club is a voluntary independent artist run project, free to join and funded entirely by members/donations. We aim to support and contribute to the arts in Waltham Forest. TURNAROUND is currently our main focus however we are also continuing with our monthly meetings at Ye Olde Rose & Crown (Hoe St, E17).

This coming Monday evening (27th February) we will be hosting a talk by legal experts from Queen Mary University about copyright. The talk will be in the Red Room and start at 7pm. Admission is free or by donation. Non-members are welcome.

Waltham Forest Arts Club will be facilitating an exhibition programme entitled, TURNAROUND – a series of weekly pop up exhibitions by club members.

Waltham Forest Arts Club hopes to find out tomorrow that we have been successful in our bid for a unit at Wood Street Market. If so we will create a pop up gallery space for Arts Club members.

There has been a very encouraging response to the call for interest in exhibiting in the space. Thank you for this. If the club has been successful there is quite a short time in which to set up and coordinate the exhibition programme.

We have had a provisional planning meeting in which we created a title for the exhibition programme – TURNAROUND.

The first phase of Turnaround will consist of 11 weekly exhibitions, starting 4th February and ending 28th April. The following is the list of exhibition dates. Note that the first exhibition is longer than one week and will be a group show featuring artworks within a size limit.

Turnaround 1 — 4th – 17th Feb’ (group show)

Turnaround 2 — 18th – 24th Feb’

Turnaround 3 — 25th – 2nd Mar’

Turnaround 4 — 3rd – 9th Mar’

Turnaround 5 — 10th – 16th Mar’

Turnaround 6 — 17th – 23rd Mar’

Turnaround 7 — 24th – 30th Mar’

Turnaround 8 — 31st – 6th Apr’

Turnaround 9 — 7th – 13th Apr’

Turnaround 10 — 14th – 20th Apr’

Turnaround 11 — 21st – 28th Apr’

We would like all the artists who expressed an interest in exhibiting in the space to opt for a ‘turnaround slot’, being aware that exhibiting involves a committment to invigilating or minding the exhibition.

We will contact arts club members with more details about participating in this project on confirmation of our success (or failure) in the bid.

In particular, we attended the Wood Street Indoor Market open evening to find out about the free units on offer from February 2012, with a view to proposing a Waltham Forest Arts Club Pop-Up Gallery.

We would like to present a programme of weekly exhibitions by arts club members, encompassing our broad spectrum of artistic practices.

The deadline for the application for a space is 10th January. Julie Caves has kindly offered to make the application on behalf of the Arts Club. What might improve our chances of getting a space and confirm you, the club, actually wants and needs a space, is to send the Arts Club an expression of interest.

Basically this might state:

1. You would like to contribute an exhibition, or works for exhibition.

2. You can contribute some time to invigilating or minding an exhibition – yours or another artists’.

Please send this message to: exhibitions@artsclub.org.uk ……. expressing an interest is not necessarily making a binding commitment.

Clearly there are a lot of details about the project which have been left out of this message. Questions can be sent to the above address as well. Another post will be published in the next week that will give some more details about the project.

Norlington Road Studio, ART SALE, 17th December from 7pm, in aid of ‘Mind’

Norlington Road Artists are organising an open hang exhibition at 66 Norlington Road, Leyton on the 17th December to raise awareness for the charity ‘Mind’.

Christmas Craft Fair at The Mill

We have paid £20 for a table and Sue Higgins has signed up to staff the table for the first half of the day. Anyone who wants to bring by small things that might sell at a table top sale would be welcome. We will need to split the costs of the table so the more that join the cheaper for all. Anyone that can staff the table for the last 3 hours would be great as well. Email: exhibitions@artsclub.org.uk and Julian will forward those to me.

It is a fundraiser for the Mill so the £20 goes to a good cause and we will be promoting the Club with some flyers to let the community know we exist.

The fair will also have jewellery, knitwear, accessories, photography, ceramics, crafts and cake!
